Review of the 2010 Institute of Medicine Report and its Impact on the Future of Nursing


The Institute of Medicine (IOM) started a movement to help in the assessment and initiation of growth in the nursing profession. IOM came up with for suggestions to act as actions to enable the nursing profession to attain the full potential as well as meeting the increasing demands of the healthcare system. Nurses ought to achieve higher training and education and be able to work collaboratively with other physicians. The nursing practice also requires efficiency in the data collection process coupled with proper policy-making procedures. The review of the IOM 2010 report, “The Future of Nursing: Leadership Change, Advanced Health” has an impact on the future of nursing. This paper seeks to review the 2010 IOM report and come up with its impact on the Nursing future.

Impact on Nursing Education

The focus for improving nursing education to meet the needs, standards and demands of healthcare regards the 2010 Affordable Care Act.  Through education and training, nursing learners need to get knowledge that will help them to meet the demands and demands of the healthcare system. There is a shift in the public’s healthcare needs from an acute setting to a more attention one that deals with chronic care matters coupled with long-term care. Therefore, nursing training and education ought to offer a link to both chronic care issue as well as long-term care. By offering a nursing education system that deals with both the long-term and chronic care issues, nurses will have the capability to provide core skills competently. Also, the programs of increasing BSN nurses and APRNs will raise the understanding by nurses on the various diagnosis treatment procedures in a safe and quality manner (Gurzick & Kesten, 2010). The coordination and management will then compromise both the primary care and community health.

Another impact of 2010 IOM report on the nursing education is by attaining education and training throughout the career. According to the IOM, a nursing student requires education together with other practitioners throughout the career. The step will aid in closing the existing gap between the nurse’s communication barriers with other physicians hence eliminating the intimidating sense (Havens et al., 2010). Nurses are usually at the forefront with the patient in healthcare service; therefore, educating and training nurses on how to collaborate with physicians will improve patient outcomes in chronic, acute as well as public care setups.

Impact on Nursing Practice for Week 8: Your Nursing Destiny

The 2010 IOM report has led to the increase in responsibilities, demands as well as requirements within the healthcare system with the aim of promoting patient-centered care. Additionally, because of the high population of the elderly old, there is a more focus towards the primary care (Institute of Medicine, 2010).  The shifted focus towards primary care requires consideration of issues like chronic care, prevention and health promotion, long-term care, racial diversity healthcare as well as diversity in the socio-economic healthcare.

The removal of barriers like stringent legislation is another impact of the 2010 IOM report on the nursing practice. Nursing practice requires flexibility and versatility by the removal of the barriers that can affect the safety and quality of patient care (Gurzick & Kesten, 2010). Nurses require a working environment that enables them to deliver the healthcare service that reflects and compliments the training skills with no barriers.

Impact on the Nurse’s Role as a Leader

The roles of the nursing leadership are significant in the process of bridging the gap for better collaboration between physicians, other health care professions and nurses.  Appropriate leadership skills allow for the achievement of advanced practicing and high level of education thus enabling the application of research and evidence-based nursing practices. For better nursing leadership roles, it is ideal for nurses to have the capacity to bring the difference from the leadership point of view. Nurses need to advocate for changes in policies as well as take part in political processes for the development of leadership roles (Havens et al., 2010). When nurses take leadership roles and participate in political processes, advocacy as well as decision-making, there shall be an improvement in the future of nursing.

How to Meet the Goals of the IOM Report

The first way of achieving the goals of the 2010 IOM report is by embracing technology. Technology leads to the creation of innovative opportunities thus offering different ways on how to improve the education of nurses alongside allowing advance healthcare structure. For instance, the application of electronic medical records reduces errors. Secondly, partnership and collaboration is another way of achieving the goals of 2010 IOM report. The interdisciplinary collaborations lead to improvement in the patient outcomes thus success in the continuity of care-giving (Institute of Medicine, 2010). Conversely, the creation of partnership across businesses, communities and philanthropists creates a strong bond of the network in the sharing of ideas and resources for research and technology hence development and investments in healthcare.

Continuity of care across different settings is also a way of ensuring the achievement of the 2010 IOM report goals. Continuity occurs by merging improved collaborations and technology to bring transitions in the various settings in a more seamless manner.  The establishment of smooth transitions in healthcare settings like from the hospitals to rehabs or from the rehabs to homecare centers reduces readmissions risks. Moreover, providing room for nurse-managed primary care is another way to achieve the IOM report goals (Gurzick & Kesten, 2010). Since the nurses’ first duty is to offer care to the patient, they require a nurse-managed primary care setting for improved patient outcome.


Conclusively, the 2010 IOM report claims and suggestions will lead to improvements in the nursing future.  The implementation of the recommendations of the report will give nurses a voice and position to operate professionally. The changes in the nursing education, practice and leadership roles will offer an opportunity for nurses to meet the demands and standards of the healthcare system with ease.
