The filmmaker may use different lighting and field of view to create suspense or different moods in the film. The mesh of the afternoon is a short film that demonstrates the various roles of lighting in filmmaking. The theme of the film focuses on the love story. The film begins with a scene of a woman placing a flower on the table. High lighting and contrast are used in the film to allow the audience to see the flower and other objects presented. Furthermore, a narrow field of view is used to direct the focus on the activities of the woman in the scene. The flower is used in the scene to symbolize love. The brightness in the scene also creates an ambiance mood that depicts love and so introducing the theme in the film. Furthermore, the high lighting is evident through the scene where a woman walks into a room

The scene featuring the knife is enlarged. Also, the size of the knife is magnified. The knife is symbolically used to indicate the evil that is about to happen in the film. Enlargement of the knife also indicates its significance and emphasis on the bitter side of love. A close oblique view is used in the scene. As the light gets darker, the scenes become more worrying. In addition, the field of view is reduced significantly to create suspense. The lighting becomes obscure in the scene where somebody goes after the woman in the film and thereafter, a knife is presented.

Furthermore, the contrast varies depending on what the director wants the audience to see. In the scene where the knife is presented in dark; the contrast is clear and one can easily see the knife and this is used to enhance the theme development in the film.

The costume is used in the scene to indicate the cultural values and expectations of a woman in society. While the dress shows the curve of the woman and to reflects the element of beauty she has, it completely covers her body parts. The dress is long and stretches to the ground to cover the entire body. The virtue of modesty is upheld in the costume design in the scene.

In another scene, the woman appears putting on a pair of trousers and this is a trend in fashion that emerged in the 19th century and thus consistent with the timing of the film.
