The Supersize Me film gives the report on the investigation conducted by Spurlock to unveil the health harms associated with the consumption of fast food. There is an increasing trend in the consumption of fast food as people become preoccupied with the career life. The fast food in one way or the other saves people time they could have used going home to prepare meals. However, Spurlock unveils something deeper in the merging trend. The incidences of obesity continue to increase and pose a great to public health. According to Spurlock, the consumption of the fast food increases the risk of obesity among the populations. Additionally, using McDonald as an example, Spurlock shows that fast food restaurants spend lots of money in advertisement in so influence people into the culture of consuming their products. Therefore, Spurlock opens he minds of the readers to think into the issue, but then, who is to blame between the fast food restaurants and the consumers? While the producing companies are liable for the health concerns, people have the option to choose what to consume.

Spurlock narration is convincing to the audiences because of the extensive use of logos to provide evidence to the claims. The authenticity and reliability of the claim can be judged based on the existing facts and evidences. Spurlock uses graphs and animations to prove the point that fast food are unhealthy and presents greater health risks to the consumers. The use of animation in the film makes the facts more realistic and appealing to the audiences. Furthermore, Spurlock asks questions so that the audiences may think deeply into the issues of discussion. The outstanding fact is that fast food are harmful to an individual’s health and this is evident through the narrator’s experiences.

Also, Spurlock states that McDonald uses about 1.4 billion annually on advertisement to win more consumers. But the main question in this would be, ‘‘why spend such a huge amount on promoting a product that is harmful to the consumers?’’ Ethically, companies ought to sell products that are safe and does not cause any harm to the consumers. On the other hand, the fast food companies also play a role in addressing the needs of the people in the corporate world who may not have enough time to prepare their meals at home. However, it would essential if such companies to warn their consumers not to live sedentary lifestyles. Engaging in daily physical exercise prevents the accumulation of fats in the body tissues and thus reduce the risk of obesity and cardiovascular risks.

Other than logos, Spurlock uses pathos to communicate the argument in the film. Cinematic techniques and scene display varied to convey the changing moods and emotions in the film. Also, the use of the close-up camera technique was meant to allow the audiences focus on the major themes in the scenes. At one point, Spurlock becomes sick after consuming the product from McDonald Company. Spurlock developed liver complications and the cost of consuming fast food is significantly enhanced when the mother has to donate one of her kidneys to Spurlock. This triggers the audiences the think of how poor dietary intake can result in organ failure and even death. Spurlock’s expression warns the people against consuming fast foods.

Obesity results from the accumulation of fat molecules in the body and this may be due to consumption of excess calories. The film does not give the exact amount of food consumes by Spurlock on daily basis and thereafter, activities he engaged in. However, from the contemporary perspective, consuming high calories with inactivity promotes obesity development. The fact that Spurlock consumed the fast food and became ill shows that all fast foods are unhealthy and should not be consumed. This may not be true. A proper dietary intake requires that people consume proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamin and minerals in the recommended quantities. Therefore, even people who consume improper quantities of the food constituents at homes can still develop obesity and the associated health risks. While the film is an eye-opener to the audiences, including young and old people, it tends to be polarized in the manner in which it addresses the issue.

Finally, Spurlock uses personal experiences to convince the audiences that fast food products are unhealthy. The personal experience affirms that he presents firsthand information and thus enhancing the credibility of his argument. Obesity results from poor nutritional intake and sedentary lifestyle. People should strike to consume what is beneficial and live right. In addition, Spurlock challenges people to be health-conscious and choose what to consume rather than being influenced by advertisements on media platforms. Fast food companies spend lots of money on advertisement compared to the companies dealing with healthy food. Therefore, if people were to be influenced by the magnitude of advertisement, it is apparent that a large percentage will develop obesity and other health problems as evident in the case of Spurlock.
