Stroke refers to the interruption in the blood supply to the brain and thus altering neurological functioning. Stroke causes long-term disabilities that compromise the victim’s quality of life. People with stroke lose motor skills and this means that they remain bedridden for a long period. The magnitude of harm depends on the extent and the affected areas in the brain. According to Fadilah, Minarti & Asnani (2017), the care patients with stroke receive is stressful since have to be assisted in all aspects of life including bathing. Besides, the caregivers and family members suffer physical and psychological distress and they are most likely to be depressed. Stroke is a long-term condition and patients recovering from the condition may not regain their full physiological abilities. The financial costs involved in managing the condition are enormous and this affects the quality of life for the family.
Nurses have an important role in addressing the psychological and emotional needs of patients with stroke. Patients with stroke are likely to lose hope in life especially when they realize that they can no longer do things they used to do before. Therefore, the nurses must assure that they will regain their physical and psychological functioning with time. Encouraging the patients allows them to be positive about life and fight their emotional and psychological fears (Kirkevold, et al., 2018). Addressing the spiritual needs of the patients promotes their wellbeing and recovery process. Furthermore, the nurses provide an opportunity for the patients to feel accompanied in their struggles. For instance, by holding the patient’s hand, the nurses make them feel special and cared for and so become emotionally stable (Lehto, Kylmä & Åstedt‐Kurki, 2019). It is important to help the patients achieve their long-term goals and preventing other conditions such as pressure ulcers that could worsen the patient’s emotional and psychological status.
