Marx and Engels Ideological Conceptualization

According to Marx and Engels, human beings and their behaviors are influenced by external factors. They present an ideological conceptualization that creates the basis for socialism and communism. People cannot exist independently but, interdepend on one another (Marx & Engels, 1968). On the other hand, Berger and Luckman’s theory focuses on reality and knowledge of social constructions. The social construction of reality differs from Marx and Engels’s argument in the sense that people’s values and personalities are not shaped entirely by the external environment but rather through the interactions with others and personal experiences. Furthermore, Berger and Luckman’s theory hold that different social groups have unique capacities transcending to their own narrow positions (Berger & Luckmann, 1967). Knowledge is socially distributed, and so different groups have unique ideologies and thus can exist independently.

Marx and Engels‘ ideology is more binding in the current society. The need for international integration and cooperation has increased significantly. People or even nations cannot exist in isolation, but rather, are interdependent. Social existences and structures are also affected by external forces. Furthermore, the ideology is also real in my practice with clients. While people may have a private life, their behaviors are usually influenced by external factors and social norms. From my interaction with the clients, I have also learned that global interactions have made people’s values more common. Additionally, social capital is becoming more and more common, especially during social events such as weddings and funerals, among others. The two perspectives are useful since they help define and understand human behaviors and respond to utopia.
