Interprofessional Communication: Core Competencies

Core competencies are the values that help nurses to execute the best healthcare delivery to the patients and improve their experiences. The nurse must be able to understand the needs of the patients and provide appropriate diagnoses. Getting the needs of the patient requires the application of critical thinking and using relevant cultural and communication competencies to obtain patients’ history. As a result, teamwork and collaboration competencies allow the nurses to coordinate with other healthcare providers in ensuring seamless care delivery to the patient. The collaboration is facilitated through their knowledge of nursing informatics which involves making good use of the patients’ data in promoting best experiences and quality healthcare delivery (Krueger, Ernstmeyer & Kirking, 2017).

The healthcare organization promotes collaboration through the weekly meetings held which involve people from different departments to discuss the patients’ needs. Such meetings create an opportunity to hear the contribution from the various healthcare cadres on the patients’ management and treatment plan. Additionally, the institution promotes teamwork and collaboration competency by establishing forums where the employees can freely share their opinions and ideas which are then used in developing a collaborative operational framework (Krueger, Ernstmeyer & Kirking, 2017).

Furthermore, the organizations recently introduced a telehealth system which involves professional from different units. The professionals have to work together to achieve the desired treatment goals. Furthermore, the system allows professionals to share data and discuss critical issues and decisions regarding the patient’s treatment.  The frequent communications facilitate teamwork and integrate the inter-professional team.

Achieving such competencies has never been easy because of cultural and diversity issues. However, having solid communication frameworks helps in bringing people together. Additionally, offering training on the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the organization has helped transform the attitudes of the employees towards the competencies. As a result, all people in the organization appreciate the role of collaboration and teamwork in promoting better treatment outcomes (Krueger, Ernstmeyer & Kirking, 2017). Also, the organization works on improving informatics competency by having an integrated data management system.

Patient-centered care The nurses in the institution focus on identifying the patients’ needs by exploring their social, cultural, and behavioral patterns and analyze how they could be contributing to the patients’ illness. The organization aims to promote the patients’ wellbeing and this means that the healthcare providers give much attention to the patients and obtain relevant history for treating them.
Evidence-based practice Evidence-based practice is a complex system that involves the identification of issues and exploring the possible factors contributing to them. Also, it involves developing solutions to the issues (Harper, et al., 2017). The organization engaged recently in an obesity prevention program. The program involved identifying the community factors influencing the rise in the incidences of obesity. Lack of physical exercise and relevant education among the mothers were linked with high childhood obesity. As a result, the organization develops a community education campaign aiming at eliminating obesity.
Quality improvement The institution collects various key quality indications on monthly basis and uses the data to identify the areas that need to be improved. For instance, the institution enrolled a leadership program that focused on promoting openness and transparency to facilitate free sharing of ideas to help eliminate burnout incidences among the nurses.
Informatics Informatics involves the use of information technology in promoting the quality of healthcare services delivered to the patient. The institution encourages proper data collection and management. Furthermore, the institution has a database system that allows the healthcare providers to share important information that could be used in bettering the patients’ treatment.

The analysis above involves the various core competencies for nursing practice. The application of the core competencies guarantees better outcomes for the patients. The competencies allow healthcare organizations to constantly monitor their operations and address the key issues that could hamper quality healthcare delivery. For example, quality improvement and evidence-based practices ensure that the patients’ needs are addressed at an affordable cost and the quality of the healthcare providers’ life is improved.
