The criteria is as follows: Area of focus- Does the area of focus involve teaching and learning? Research questions- Does the researcher state questions that were answerable given the researcher’s expertise, time, and resources? Locus of control- Was the area of focus within the researcher’s locus of control? Data collection- Did the researcher use appropriate data collection techniques to answer the study’s question?

Ethics- Did the research face any ethical challenges? If so, how were they resolved? Reflective stance- In what ways has the action research effort contributed to the researcher’s reflective stance on the ways teaching and learning are viewed? Action – Did the outcomes of the study lead to action? Action-data connection- How is the proposed action connected to the study’s data analysis and interpretation? Of the 8 criteria listed above, I believe that area of focus and research questions have the biggest impact on a research project. The area of focus guides the overall research project and leads the teacher researcher to the research questions. To conduct a thorough action research project the area of focus must have clarity and involve teaching and learning for an action researcher. The criteria that has the biggest impact on ethical practices is ethics. Teacher researchers need to be sure that they are completing their project in an ethical manner. They need to be sure that they are getting the correct permission to proceed from students, parents, and administration. If they experience an obstacle along the way they need to handle it quickly, professionally, and ethically so as to not disrupt their study. Prompt 2: What are some appropriate criteria for evaluating an action research project? Which of the criteria have the biggest impact on a research project and ethical practices?

Explain your response. Mills (2018) provides the following 8 criteria for evaluating an action research project: area of focus, the research questions, locus of control, data collection, ethics, reflective stance, action, and action-data connection. For example, for evaluating the area of focus, looking at how the research involves teaching and learning and how the researcher applied it in context, demonstrates that the action research has clarity (Mills, 2018). Clarity means that the researcher has narrowed the focus area appropriately to implement in a study. In research questions, this criteria looks at what questions the researchers included in the study that helped make connections that relate to the focus of the action research.

The ethics criteria evaluates how the researcher presented participant information, was it not only accurate but provided in a sensitive manner that does not cause embarrassment for students and participants (Mills, 2018). An example would be to provide names of students or singling them out in the research. All 8 criteria for evaluating an action research project have an impact, however I believe that the area of focus, data collection, and action-data connection make a bigger impact. Area of focus ensures that the action research has clarity and focus point to conduct the study. Evaluating the method of data collection assures that that the study was conducted with qualitative and or quantitative methods to measure the teaching and learning in the study. The action-data connection serves to reflect on the overall study and determine what connections exist that can be pointed out and look further to make improvements in our teaching and student learning.
