Case Analysis – Integrating Theoretical Orientations

Assess the evidence-based practices implemented in this case study by addressing the following issues:

· Explain the connection between each theoretical orientation used by Dr. Remoc and the four interventions utilized in the case.

· Consider Dr. Remoc’s utilization of two theoretical frameworks to guide her treatment plan. Assess the efficacy of integrating two orientations based on the information presented in the case study. Describe some potential problems with prescribing medication as the only treatment option for children with ADHD.

· Identify tasks and positive reinforcements that might be included in Billy’s token economy chart given the behavior issues described in the case. (There are articles in the recommended resources that may assist you in this portion of the assignment.)

· Evaluate the effectiveness of the four treatment interventions implemented by Dr. Remoc and support your statements with information from the case and two to three peer-reviewed articles from the Ashford University Library.

· Recommend three additional treatment interventions that would be appropriate in this case. Use information from the Hamblin and Gross “Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders” chapter to help support your recommendations. Justify your selections with information from the case.

Theoretical Orientation

The cognitive theory is one of the six major theoretical orientation outlined in the manual. The theory focuses on how people think and behave. The theory assumes that people’s thinking affect the way they behave and this is different from other perspectives that consider other factor such as genetic and biological influences. Despite other theories and perspectives exiting to explain he human conduct, the cognitive theory addresses some of the limitations existing in the theories. For instance, people’s behaviours may change from one environment to another despite having a constant genetic composition; this confirms that biological theory is not efficient in its explanation. The cognitive theory developed by Aaron Beck emphasizes the role of mind’s cognition in an individual’s behaviour. Therefore, a dysfunction in an individual’s though impairs the emotions and thus behaviours. In practicality, when students develop fear towards exam, they are likely to behave differently based on what the fear orients them into.

The application of the theories does not vary from one population to another; however, the integration of the various theories can provide a superior explanation to human behaviour. For example, the cognitive theory can be supplemented with the behavioural theory among others to define why people behave differently. It is common to find people from the same family or community behaving in a given manner and this can be explained biologically; though, the mind has also a significant role. The macro and micro environments affects the way people think and even perceive their environment and experiences. Human behaviour is complex and is affected by various factors. Therefore, I don’t think that some theories are better in certain populations.
