Business Research Paper Assignment Sample Paper

Using the current structures and systems as a foundation, organizational design is utilized to enhance organizational performance. The design philosophy and change management both depend on a number of different elements. Failure to take these aspects into account could result in ineffective organizational design and change. In the seventh edition of his book on organizational design, Gareth Jones discusses organization theory design and change. The book highlights a number of organizational design elements and offers helpful information that can assist organizational leaders in managing change in their operational systems and adopting new designs to ensure efficient operation. Organizational design faces a number of difficulties, such as the balance between differentiation and integration, organizational structure and mechanistic and the balance between centralization and decentralization (Jones, Gareth 46). This paper analyzes organizational theory design and change basing mainly on the information from organizational theory design and change by Gareth Jones, 7th edition.

Different theories employ different ideas to explain the organizational structure. The organizational theories define the organizational management techniques and efficiency based on either classical approaches or scientific approaches. In order to achieve standardization, efficiency, and simplification in the organizational operation, the scientific management method is primarily founded on the concept of proper work planning. The bureaucratic approach views the organization as a sector of society at large and is primarily founded on the following principles: specialization, structure, logic, democracy, and predictability. Organizational design encompasses a number of factors, including the structure and culture (Rothwell et al. 127).

The bureaucratic approach views the organization as a sector of society at large and is primarily founded on the following principles: specialization, structure, logic, democracy, and predictability. Organizational design encompasses a number of factors, including the structure and culture (Rothwell et al. 127).

The decision-making process, management, and information technology are among the variables Gareth lists as being crucial in the organizational structure since they have an impact on how well the firm performs. Organizations are prone to change, but there are some variables that could prevent it, including group- and individual-level resistance to change, which can have an impact on organizational transformation and design (Jones, Gareth, 76).

Poor organizational management is a major contributing factor in the quick demise of many new firms. All newly established enterprises are doomed to failure unless the management team plans their operations well. Failure is not a necessary part of any business organization, but it does result from inadequate cost control, subpar products that don’t satisfy customers, and environmental changes that have an impact on how the business operates. An intentional new organizational design or modification of the current organizational structure can decrease company failure risks (Snow, Charles 289). Assessment of environmental elements and the current environmental conditions is necessary for organizational design in order to ensure alignment. Aligning and reshaping enterprise components to achieve the vision and mission results in it.

Gross domestic product, the exchange rate, and energy forces are a few of the metrics used to evaluate an organization’s functional failure. When the organization’s executives adopt the designer’s suggestion and implement it to enhance their performance, organizational design is effective. A variety of principles are crucial while analyzing an organizational design. Leaders need to be aware that operating environment and strategy, not some non-organizational factors, dictate design. Design entails a holistic way of thinking about the external environment, organizational structure, performance, metrics, and culture. Any design set needs to be future-focused and should be treated very seriously because it uses a lot of resources.

A strong organizational structure maintains the organization’s agility to continue functioning efficiently. All organizational components are placed in their proper positions during the process, which results in a degree of specialization in how the company operates. Designing is mostly influenced by the business’s strategy and operating environment. Leadership consensus on the organization’s missions, visions, and guiding values serves as the foundation for the design process. This shows that the entire process necessitates careful consideration and strategic preparation of numerous tasks.

Business Research Paper Assignment: Organizing in a Changing Global Environment

Numerous elements influence the design process, and while creating an organizational structure, the designer must pay close attention to them. Social considerations, such as changes in the workforce, technological issues, economic factors, environmental factors, and political factors all have an impact. According to the five thumbs rule, while establishing an organization, there must be a compelling cause. It becomes challenging to interest people in the endeavor without a strong argument. For instance, in business slang, a flaming platform is required to bring about a significant transformation within the corporation (Snow, Charles 234).

Another criterion is that there must be an option before making a design decision. Simulators can help you develop options. An indication of the need for the design can be found by mapping the workflow and determining the impact contexts and situations have. All the individuals involved in organizational activities are affected by the design strategies used. Storytelling is a strategy that can help in gathering enough information to determine whether the new design is necessary. For instance, the designer can encourage storytelling among the staff members so that they can express their opinions on the project’s nature and content and help it perform better. The executive director of IBM’s Institute of Knowledge Management, Larry Prusak, discusses the importance of storytelling and characterizes an organization as a non-mechanistic rational model where people interact with one another. When it comes to organizational design, storytelling can be utilized to gather important data that can help (Rothwell et al. 45).

Time is yet another aspect of organizational design that is crucial. Work in design should be stable and moving like a gyroscope because it takes place in a dynamic context. When there is a sense of urgency and a powerful coalition serving as a leader that can persuade all the stakeholders to accept an organizational design, organizational change can be successful. It is crucial to paint a clear picture of the restructured organization in terms that everyone can recognize and comprehend because doing so will pique their enthusiasm in taking part in the project.

Assuming that business operations involve frequent and regular outcome measurements, look for any signs that something inside the company is out of alignment. A significant indicator for design work is the absence of the current alignment. On the other hand, since it requires a lot of resources to operate well, there is typically no need to start the design if everything is in place. Finding the organization’s existing alignment is crucial, and after that has been done, keep your eyes open and your attention on the future. As the organizational context evolves daily, it’s critical to maintain awareness throughout the environmental scan process in order to identify the necessity and the proper design alignment (Hannan, Michael and John 134).

The need to keep a business adapted for the current environment persists, which suggests that there are different times and places to make designs. When the environment performs poorly, the design is revealed by the results of the environment signaling, indicating that the current design is ineffective and that a change is consequently necessary.

There are several design models that exist in the contemporary society and the one that makes sense depends on the scenario, setting and culture in the organizational environment. The user’s complexity in terms of cost and implementation tactics influences the model choice as well. There are five different system models with various key components. The model should specify the predetermined role of the design before the design process is started. As an illustration, a designer who wants to create kitchenware products with a specific target market in mind must plan the modification and make sure the products continue to appeal to consumers. Organizational design is an intentional construct that can be done purposefully.

The role of organizational structure in the design process is determined by the desired goals. Decisions about organizational structure typically take a back seat to structural decisions in the minds of executives. To evaluate the organization’s existing situation and support the achievement of anticipated outcomes in a way that is consistent with other organizational components, an organizational design must at the very least include a structural assessment. When doing an assessment, it is important to take into account if the management attention that the structure gives to sources of competitive advantage in the market is sufficient. Additionally, it ought to support the creation of fresh tactics and safeguard the units that need unique cultures. The foundation of mature organizational systems is the classical organization theory, which is characterized by scientific management concepts (Jones, Gareth 65).

Designing Organizational Structure: Specialization and Coordination

A clear hierarchy in the workforce and a status-driven mindset linked to advancement are required in organizational structure. Depending on how the individuals inside the organization perceive the change, change in an organization has a variety of repercussions. The interaction within a system is affected by the dynamic operating environment’s ongoing changes. To ensure commitment in the worker productivity model, the organization should stress horizontal tasks and process attention (Hannan, Michael and John 157). Maximizing margins through the use of economies of scale and functional competence is the primary function of the functional structure. The structure works best when there are already established, stable, homogenous markets with clearly defined consumer requirements.
