Sample Paper: Agenda Comparison Grid Assignment Template for Part 1 and Part 2

Reproductive and women’s health remain among the important health topics that rise to the presidential agenda level in the US. Women’s reproductive rights remain an integral concern in America today following the diversity of thoughts on what should or should not be allowed. This health issue is affected by various social determinants of health, especially poverty. The current reproductive health concern entails abortion initiatives. Most women seeking abortion are vulnerable to poverty, which correlates with poor reproductive health outcomes (van der Meer et al., 2022). Such include insufficient maternal survival, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and early childbearing. Besides, most of these women cannot afford safe abortions as they lack enough finances for safe medical care. Similarly, there is inadequate reproductive healthcare coverage in the US.
There are two perspectives on women’s reproductive rights; where some support the idea that women have the right over their bodies and choose what to do, while others do not concede. Abortion has been a major reproductive health issue for the two recent American presidents. For instance, former President Trump supported significant restrictions on federal funding for abortions. Few exceptions to these restrictions where abortion was allowed include if the woman experienced rape or incest or if the pregnancy was an endangerment to the woman. Additionally, Trump opposed federal funding for various reproductive health services and prohibited federal Title IX (Franklin & Ginsburg, 2019). During Trump’s era, family planning ceased as funding was no longer available to clinics providing abortion services. Lastly, Trump opposed the ruling decision Roe v. Wade on protecting women’s rights to choose. Therefore, President Trump did not support abortion rights, access to abortion care services, or birth control healthcare coverage by ACA.
Contrastingly, the current Biden-Harris administration has a different approach to women’s reproductive health on abortion. President Biden opposes Trump’s previous policy agenda on abortion and its healthcare coverage. He has allowed federal funding for abortion in the US and has vowed to restore planned parenthood through sufficient federal funding (Waterhouse, 2022). Further, Biden supports the need to protect every woman’s right to choose. He aims to make safe and legal abortion a statute, not a court decision. Moreover, President Biden aims to expand and ensure access to affordable abortion and birth control by restoring the ACA prospects.
I would do differently regarding abortion to implement specific requirements to ensure women are not taking advantage of their free will to abort. For instance, I will provide certain restrictions, like the reasons for aborting are clearly illustrated. Such includes if the woman is underage, has been raped, is not financially and emotionally ready to care for a child, and the woman’s health is at risk with pregnancy. Besides, I will include sufficient counseling services for women experiencing abortion and other reproductive health issues. Choosing to terminate a pregnancy is never an easy journey, regardless of it being willingly or unwillingly. Therefore, women’s psychological and mental health is vital to include when making decisions.
